Baby Names and NaNo News

A big warm welcome to little Kai Rooney. It's always good to hear news of a new life arrived safely and I wish the family well.

However, I have to admit to a sinking heart when I heard what Wayne and Coleen have called their baby. It's not that I don't think they've chosen a lovely name, it's just that's the name I carefully researched and decided on for the hero of my competition chapter.

Kai is from the Welsh for 'keeper of keys' - and my hero was locked up tight. Plus, Kai was going to take his lady love to the wilds of Wales to meet his parents. The Welsh connection is no more - on very good advice from Lorraine, I relocated to Fiji. However, I kept the name because by that time I felt it suited him.

But now - oh horror - everyone will think I've copied the Rooneys.

Too late to do anything about it though, so I'm not going to worry.

And as for NaNo? Oh, no. I'm going to start tomorrow. And now there'll be some of you thinking I'm nothing but talk.

I think Kai is a lovely name, Suzanne. No one will think you copied it.

Good luck with the NaNo - once you get going the words will fly x

I'd never heard of the name before! I'm sure no-one will accuse you of copying the Rooney's - unless you have a Wayne in there as well?

I thought about starting NaNo in December instead, but I'm guessing that's not really the point ...

I think Kai is a fab name too! Though for NZ readers there will a slightly different connotation. It's the Maori word for food. :-) Yum, yum, I say.

I don't think it's all talk at all. I have every faith that you will start NaNo when the time is right for you.

Love it! It's a great name for a hero I'm so glad you're keeping it. I'll vouch for you if anyone starts chanting "copycat" at you in the playground ;).

I'm not being a good NaNoer either if that makes you feel better?

Don't think of what anyone thinks! You'll be fine!

I would like to state I'm not anti-Wales before I get hate mail! Just wasn't sure the eds would like it as a Modern Heat location, not that I'm saying it's not glam, er...

Keep the name and don't worry BTW :-)

If the contest deadline was before the Rooney's baby then they might have got their idea from you!

I agree it's a lovely name. I've even met two South Africans with the name, which is most unusual.

Good luck for the contest and for Nano!

That's just strange, Suz. It's happened to me before too and with entire plots! Oh well. We just go on. And I do love the name Kai and the meaning.

Take care.

My sister and brother-in-law named their second son the same thing I named a character. I named the character years ago when I first started the book and later thought about changing his name because I liked the name so much I thought I'd save it in case I ever had a son...now I think I'm just going to keep the character's name as is. That book will never see the light of day and it's not as if we can have two Logan's in the family, right? :)

Don't change the name, Suzanne. I love it and it will work just fine in your book.

It doesn't matter...really.

Hi Suzanne,
Sorry I have dropped by so late in the proceedings.
Well I think the name is most definitely O Kai:-)
Oh yeah 'Mork and Mindy' say 'hello' or is that 'NaNo NaNo':-)
Kind wishes, Gary

It's a beautiful name, even more so when you know its meaning.

Aw, thanks, Teresa. I've still to make a start, but hope you're right about those flying words...

No, no Wayne, Karen. The way things are going, I may well be joinin you with NaNoing in December.

Hi Jackie - that's a great meaning (and I very much hope my hero's yummy, so if he is then that would fit).

Aw, thanks, Julie - and I'm sure, too, but at this rate it may be November 2010.

Thanks, Lacey - I'll shout if someone starts name calling.

Thanks, gaelikaa - good advice as always.

And you were so right, Lorraine. I love Wales dearly, but know it's too cold and wet to be the hot setting M&B are after. So why did I try to set my story there?????

Thanks, Romy. And I did send my entry off before the name was announced so that's a great way to look at it...

Thanks, Kaye. It's so scary when that's happens.

Thanks, Helen. Need all the luck I can get.

Hi, Alice. Great to see you - and Logan's a lovely name.

Thanks, Jan. Now the media fuss about the baby has quientened down I don't feel quite so bad about it.

Thanks, Gary (and perhaps I'd have more luck with NaNo if I tried calling Orson).

That happens to me all the time, Caroline - and sometimes I lose e-mails that way, too. I've decided to leave the name as is (even if it wasn't too late to change it).

Hee, hee. Thanks, Jan.
